Journaling prompts: getting comfortable with discomfort

Each month I host a free 'Journaling for well-being' workshop. It's 30 minutes of support and inspiration for your journaling practice. We focus on two techniques:

1 - Wild writing, a free-style journaling method.

2 - Utilising guided prompts around a particular theme.

The theme for the session was 'getting comfortable with discomfort'.

Sitting with discomfort. I talk about this a lot with clients. When we experience discomfort, we want to push through it as fast as possible. Some of us may busy and distract ourselves from feeling the discomfort by delving into work, organising the house, planning events or social engagements. We may try to numb the discomfort with food, alcohol or exercise.

We may even convince ourselves that the discomfort has passed.

But your path to growth is in the centre of that discomfort. Your learning and your resilience. Your boost in confidence. Sitting with the unknown, trusting yourself that it will pass, that can feel excruciating and sometimes completely irrational. Surely, we can ‘busy’ our way through.

Pausing, being, allowing the thoughts and feelings and emotions to rise, without continuing to be ‘productive', without distracting or numbing. That is where your true spirit is revealed. You can do it. You’ve done it before. You will again.

You’ve heard the quote; ‘Our comfort zone is a nice place to be, but nothing grows there’.

Here are some journaling prompts to reflect on ‘getting comfortable with discomfort’:

  • Write about a time you felt discomfort with a situation.

  • On reflection, what did you learn from that experience?

  • How did you navigate the discomfort at the time?

  • What would you do differently should you experience that again?

  • How can you reframe your thoughts about discomfort to see it as an opportunity for growth rather than a negative experience?

  • How has dealing with discomfort made you more resilient?

  • How can you practice self-compassion when you're in uncomfortable situations?

Why not save this post or share with a friend who you think may find these prompts useful.

Next month, my free journaling workshop takes place on 1st July and is focused on the theme of living in alignment. You can register here.

Alternatively, you can download my free journaling toolkit to get your started.
