Journaling prompts: developing self-compassion

Each month I host a free 'Journaling for well-being' workshop. It's 30 minutes of support and inspiration for your journaling practice. We focus on two techniques:
1 - Wild writing, a free-style journaling method.
2 - Utilising guided prompts around a particular theme.
The theme for the session was 'developing self-compassion'.
The way you speak to yourself has a huge impact on how you feel, your confidence and motivation. It can also impact your decision-making, relationships and how you treat others.
Often we fear self-compassion because it might make us ‘weak’ or less resilient. Whereas, the opposite is true. Those who practice (and it is a practice) mindful self-compassion regularly feel more resilient, forgive themselves and others, and are less critical. They are able to gently challenge the negative narrative or their inner critic.
Dr Kristin Neff’s research highlights Three Pillars of self compassion: 1) self-kindness (comforting oneself) 2) common humanity (acknowledging shared human imperfection), and mindfulness (present-moment awareness of suffering).
She defines self-compassion as treating yourself with the same kindness, care, and understanding as a good friend, rather than harsh self-judgment.
The question ‘what would you be saying to a friend right now?' is such a simple tool to help you shift your perspective away from the harsh words you may be using on yourself.
To begin developing your self-compassion, try these journaling prompt to help tap into more self-love:
When was the last time you were hard on yourself, and how would you respond if a close friend felt the same way?
What are three things you tend to criticise yourself for, and what might be a more compassionate perspective on each?
How do you usually respond to mistakes or setbacks, and what would self-compassion look like in those moments?
What does your inner critic sound like, and where might that voice come from?
In what ways can you show yourself care and kindness this week; emotionally, mentally, or physically?
